Love Your Back: Preventing and Managing Sciatica

Seemingly, out of nowhere, you’ve begun to experience sharp, electric pain down the back of your left leg. Worse, you sometimes feel tingling and numbness through your leg and into your feet. It’s hard to walk, and your activity levels have dropped dramatically.

All these signs point to sciatica–a common but frequently misunderstood condition affecting one of your body’s largest nerves. Sciatica can dramatically impact your quality of life, but the good news is that you can take steps to manage your symptoms and improve your spinal health, which helps prevent future incidences.

This Valentine’s Day, show your back a little love to help prevent and manage sciatica-related pain. Not sure how to get started? The Kleinpeter Physical Therapy team is here to help!

A Closer Look at Sciatica: What It Is, And What It Isn’t

Some people mistakenly think that “sciatica” refers to any back or lower body pain. In reality, sciatica only refers to pain, numbness, or tingling that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back through your hips, buttocks, and down each leg.

Sciatica also isn’t a condition in itself, another common misconception. Instead, it’s a symptom of an underlying issue and occurs when something irritates or compresses the sciatic nerve.  Common causes of sciatica include the following:

  • Herniated discs, which can press on the sciatic nerve.
  • Spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal that can compress the sciatic nerve.
  • Injuries or degenerative conditions that cause a disc to herniate.

Although sciatica symptoms tend to manifest in the lower body, they originate from issues in the lower back. For that reason, maintaining good spinal health is the key to preventing and treating sciatica.

Three Tips for Preventing Sciatica

Stay Active

  • Regular exercise is one of the best ways to protect your back. Staying active strengthens your back and core muscles, which provide essential support for your spine and prevent the likelihood of developing a herniated disc.

Practice Good Posture

  • Whether sitting or standing, ensure your spine is aligned to reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve. Furthermore, try to avoid remaining in one position for too long. Set a timer to remind yourself to get up, stretch, and walk around every thirty minutes.

Use Proper Lifting Techniques

  • Bend at your knees, not your waist, and avoid twisting while lifting heavy objects. Using proper form while lifting can help avoid spine injuries

How Physical Therapy Can Help Treat Sciatica

While preventing sciatica is essential, what happens if you’ve already developed it? That’s where Kleinpeter Physical Therapy comes in. Physical therapy is considered a front-line treatment for both herniated discs and spinal stenosis. We can help address the underlying cause of your sciatic symptoms through targeted exercises and other therapeutic techniques.

Here’s what you can expect:

Manual Therapy

Hands-on techniques, such as joint mobilization and soft tissue manipulation, can reduce muscle tension and improve nerve mobility.

Customized Exercise Plans

Targeted, therapeutic exercises are a key part of managing sciatica. Here are some examples:

Neurodynamic Exercises

  • Careful, controlled movements that mobilize the sciatic nerve can help reduce pain.

Core Strengthening

  • A strong core supports your spine, reducing the risk of recurring nerve irritation.

Stretching

  • Hamstring and piriformis stretches are particularly effective for relieving tension along the sciatic nerve.

Postural Training

  • Learning how to sit, stand, and move properly helps reduce strain on your spine. We’ll give you customized tips for maintaining postural awareness and keeping your spine in alignment.

Lifestyle Tips

  • Simple lifestyle changes and preventative measures can help avoid future flare-ups.

  • Cooking spray
  • 1 (18.25 oz) white cake mix
  • 1 1/4 cups Champagne/sparkling white wine at room temperature
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 4 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1/4 cup Champagne or other sparkling white wine at room temperature

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Spray 24 muffin cups with cooking spray. Mix cake mix and 1 1/4 cup Champagne in a large mixing bowl; stir in vegetable oil and eggs. Beat batter with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes. Pour batter into the prepared muffin cups, filling them 3/4 full. Bake cupcakes in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the middle of a cupcake comes out clean, about 20 minutes. Cool cupcakes in pans for 10 minutes before removing to finish cooling, about 30 more minutes. Mix butter, 1 cup confectioners’ sugar, 1/4 cup Champagne, and vanilla extract in a bowl. Stir in remaining confectioners’ sugar, 1 cup at a time, until frosting is smooth and creamy. Spread on cooled cupcakes.

Tips for A Heart-Healthy Valentine’s Day!

This year, don’t forget the most important Valentine of all: your heart! With February being the month of love and American Heart Month, here are a few tips to combine them into one fabulous celebration:

  • Try a heart-healthy treat: Pomegranate seeds, good dark chocolate, and sweet strawberries are all delicious alternatives to candy hearts.
  • Take a ballroom dance class with your sweetheart: Nothing’s more romantic than a sweeping waltz or sultry tango. But ballroom dancing is also a great cardio workout–making it the perfect date night for American Heart Month!
  • Sink into a relaxing bubble bath: Stress contributes to cardiovascular disease, so this month, set aside time to rest and relax with a bubble bath. Dim the lights, burn a few candles, and settle down with your favorite romantic read.
