Protect Your Knees While Gardening This Spring
The days are longer, the weather’s nicer, and flowers are starting to bloom: spring is officially here! If you’re a gardener, you’ve likely been waiting for this moment all winter long, and now it’s time to start digging in the dirt.
Gardening is a fantastic hobby, making it easy to get active and spend time outdoors. Unfortunately, it can strain your knees, taking the fun out of tending to your flower bed or veggie patch.
You may be tempted to push through the pain, but if you do, you only risk making it worse. That’s why the Kleinpeter Physical Therapy team has gathered some of our favorite tips to help you keep your knees safe and healthy as you work on your garden this spring.

How Gardening Affects Knee Health
Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
You may have heard this condition by its more common name, “runner’s knee,” but it doesn’t only affect runners! It causes pain around the kneecap due to excessive pressure and repetitive bending.
Osteoarthritis Flare-Ups
For those with arthritis, the added strain from kneeling can lead to increased stiffness and swelling.
Bursitis
Bursitis refers to inflammation of the small fluid-filled sacs that cushion the knee joint, often triggered by prolonged kneeling on hard surfaces.
Meniscus Strains
The meniscus is a cushion between the bones in your knee. Repetitive twisting or deep bending can lead to small tears that cause pain and swelling.
The good news is that you can prevent these issues with a few simple adjustments.
Ten Tips to Protect Your Knees While Gardening
1. Use a Garden Stool or Kneeling Pad
Reduce pressure on your knees with a padded kneeling cushion or a small garden stool. They provide support to the joint and prevent direct contact with hard ground.
2. Regularly Switch Positions
Avoid staying in one position for too long, as that can stress your knee joints and contribute to overuse injuries. As you work, make a conscious effort to shift between sitting, kneeling, and standing.
3. Practice Proper Lifting Techniques
Proper lifting form protects your knees and your back, so if you need to move heavy pots or soil bags, bend at the hips and knees. Keep objects close to your body and use both hands to distribute weight evenly.
4. Stretch Before and After Gardening
Gardening is a physical activity that requires warming up like any other. Active stretching before you start can warm up the muscles, while post-gardening stretches help prevent stiffness. Focus on your quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves.
5. Wear Supportive Footwear
Choose shoes with good arch support and cushioning. Avoid worn-out sneakers or flip-flops, which offer little to no shock absorption.
6. Use Proper Tools
Long-handled tools can minimize bending and reaching, making gardening easier on your knees. Look for ergonomic designs that reduce hand and wrist strain as well.
7. Modify Your Garden Layout
If knee pain is a major concern, consider adopting raised garden beds or vertical planters, which reduce the need for excessive kneeling and bending and make your garden much more knee-friendly.
8. Strengthen Your Leg Muscles
Stronger leg muscles help absorb impact and reduce knee strain, so add some gardening “cross-training” into your daily routine. Include simple exercises like squats, leg raises, and step-ups to support joint stability.
9. Listen to Your Body
If you feel pain, take a break. Overworking injured knees can lead to bigger issues down the road.
